NDSU had many students that fought in the Spanish-American War (1898). There is a memorial on campus to honor these students. The memorial was the idea of President John Worst (1895-1916). Worst had a tree planted for each student that was in the war along with an engraved stone. The Worst Memorial (the stone) has been moved several times but currently is in the arboretum near the main gates
