NDSU Rowing is a new
organization at NDSU. One year ago Mahinda Ferdinando and
Malshantha Kankanamge brought
rowing to North Dakota for the first time. Mahinda and
Malshantha got to work quickly. Boats were bought and new
members were
solicited.
Mahinda and Malshantha decided to start recruiting
from NDSU to add to their rowing base. NDSU students Brian
Fier and
Karley Balgaard were some of the first NDSU students to join.
It was
decided that North Dakota Rowing would spin off and create NDSU
Rowing. Brian became the president and Karley became the vice
president of the NDSU Rowing Club.
The clubs continued to
recruit
members and equipment and participated in races over the
summer. The
NDSU Rowing Club became officially recognized with NDSU in the fall of
2005.
During the fall of 2005 the NDSU Rowing Club continued to
grow in both members and equipment. The NDSU Rowing club
participated
in many on water sessions on the Red River, Lake Hawley, Lake
Ashtabula, and Lake Cormorant, among others.
Practice continued
indoors during the winter.
In February of 2006, four members
of the
NDSU Rowing Club went to New York (New York City and Albany) to pick up
rowing equipment. The members returned with three 8+ boats
and a
number of oars. In the spring of 2006 the NDSU Rowing club underwent a
number of structural changes; Brian Fier was again named President and
the single vice president position was made into multiple positions to
address the clubs growing need.
The NDSU Rowing club is planning
many outings during the fall. The NDSU Rowing club
is
looking at competing in the fall of 2006 and spring of 2007.
